So, xxxHolic.

As you might expect I have THOUGHTS. Spoilers to chapter 209, the most recent on MangaFox.

So Himawari was cursed or whatever, and Watanuki technically shouldn't exist, but what about Doumeki? I assume he's also working off some other random karmic debt, because it's CLAMP. Maybe his grandfather's (and wow, how hot is Haruka?) presence indicates it's a family thing?

Crossovers!

Tsubasa mostly comes off as a confusing mess to me, especially by the time it was revealed that Watanuki's was actually compiled of locked memories taken from Syaoran, who's actually...the whole thing makes my head hurt. Almost every time the Tsubasa characters showed up, I just braced myself for some panels of utter confusion. (This also made it more galling when the cover/copy touted that it crossed over with a series I had little to no interest in.)

Sacrifice and the Future

Since I already knew Himawari'd been married off for reasons no one understands, the actual reveal about the husband was something of a pleasant surprise. He knows of Watanuki's existence and seems to find him positive-- she's not sneaking around to call Watanuki, and the situation seems comfortable enough they can tease about Himawari's cooking compared to Watanuki's.

So, while I'm sad CLAMP broke up a perfectly good OT3, at least they didn't surround it with sturm, drang, death and (more) eye trauma.

Meanwhile, Doumeki's essentially constructed his life so he can look out for Watanuki.

But while there's an air of melancholy hanging over all this, there's also some rewards there. Doumeki seems to have found a good place in the world, and I'm not sure he'd have been happy as a doctor anyway.

It's the Little Things

I love all the little pleasures and side characters; the fox spirits, the pipe repair-- that little scene was one of the sweetest in the series-- and the pipe fox remains one of my favorite characters.

On the downside, CLAMP seems to basically consider magic to be not worth worldbuilding or time, so even when Watanuki's doing it we rarely have the vaguest idea how it works. The wises needing to be in balance is nice, but when all of a sudden there's symbols all over the place and ~magic!~ is going on but no one's going to boter explaining how...I expect better, CLAMP.

Also, how hot is Haruka? Yum.

Hmmm, but if this were on LJ, I'd have a Yuuko icon to use ... .

Yes, Haruka is hot. Even though he is presented as appearing the same age as his grandson, he comes across with a lifetime of experience, and the effect is very sexy.

See also Kurosaki Isshin (Bleach) and Touya Koyo (Hikaru no Go).
