I am considering writing a Anime and Manga: Not what you may think it is post that addresses some of the common 'objections' to manga-- Japanese culture is sexist, it's all violent, etc. Help me and share some Common Stereotypes You Have Heard in comments.

"It's all porn," is another one. I know some people who've done more than just glance at it have some large problem with seme/uke stereotypes and gender roles in manga (as well as, well, racism), all of which are present in a fair number of series but not OMNIpresent, so that's something to consider addressing. Uh. I don't know :|a The fanservice issue? Which probably fits into sexist.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I want to deal with the second level of objections or just the surface stuff.

If you're going for the people who just brush it off, you're probably better sticking with the surface stuff unless you have a lot of time on your hands. I just don't remember most of the brushoff-- OH there's also the "it's for kids" which seems kind of at odds with "it's all porn."

Yeah, that's why I was asking the audience, as it were. I definitely got 'it's so violent!' and 'the sexism is terrible' recently though, which is one of the reasons I'm thinking about doing it.

[nods] I haven't seen the "violent" argument before, but my non-manga fandoms tend to be pretty violent themselves, so that's probably why. PEOPLE AND THEIR PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS \o/ I don't even know.

Some series could leave a shallow consumer with the idea that animanga is a lot of T&A and panty shots. Some is, but hardly all.
