I'm going on vacation, so you get a movie rec for the weekend!

I kept telling people at Comic-Con: "And Parry Shen was there!"

"From Better Luck Tomorrow!"

CLEARLY THIS NEEDS TO BE REMEDIED.

Better Luck Tomorrow is about Ben a brilliant, overachieving high school kid who's bored, aimless and lovestruck. If this were a John Hughes movie, there'd probably be an inspirational narrative arc, but it's not, and the narrative arc is significantly darker and more interesting.

Ben (Parry Shen!) and his friends are brilliant, and brains and boredom lead to trouble. They start selling cheats to exams, sneaking computer parts out of stores to resell, and their crimes escalate from there. But it's not a crime movie, any more than it's a conventional high school movie. The characters take their own arcs, rather than following any formula, and the movie is infinitely richer for it.

It's well-paced, the actors are great (look for John Cho as the boyfriend of Ben's crush!), the plot is surprising and interesting...what are you waiting for?

Roger Ebert's review.
